My Peugeot 407

Change automatic transmission fluid at 40K KM

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) or ATF oil was changed at 40,000km. ATF recommended by Peugeot is ESSO 4HP20 AL4. ATF change requires about

3.1 to 3.5 liters. Service centre analyzed the ATF sample that taken out from the gearbox. I was told that the analyze is to get the content of carbon accumulated in the ATF for the period of running interval.

There is no dip stick for ATF, however if newly filled ATF is not enough the engine will show the warning of low level ATF.

Speednavi GPS Map Update part 2

Speednavi update part 2 available on November 2009. With enhanced features on the window the current Sat. nav. GPS is better than previous. The major things are:

1. Speed limit icon appear when cruising on major highway like NKVE & north south highway. Speed limit icon turn red and warning sound appear if the car exceed the limit. This may annoying also for some driver.

2.Show the road lanes in front and the lanes direction - right/left lanes.

3. Indicate rest area in front with km to reach.

407 Tyre Pressure

My 407 is using Michelin Pilot Exalto 215 55 ZR17 94W, with max tyre pressure 350kPA.

The best tyre pressure after i tried many pressure so far is 240kPA for all tyres.

With 240kPA the car performs better in term of handling, less pressure may sacrifices handling and stability degraded. This can be feel when i driving my car. Remember that this car is equipped with ESP, correct tyre pressure will help ESP compute for optimum result.

Factory specified presure is 260kPa for front and 240kPa for rear tyres. With 260kPA the will feel hard and rough, lessen the comfort feeling due to louder tyres noise when running at rough and uneven road surface.

I set my front and rear tyre pressure at 240kPa, this is about 8% pressure reduction. From what i read from the trusted source, tyre pressure shall not below than 10% of specified pressure by the car manufacturer. Because of my 407 is superb in handling, car tyre pressure is important to compliment the stability system.

The standard equipment includes 17 inch alloys with ABS, EBD & Brake Assist, automatic Xenons, seven airbags, a 10 speaker JBL Hi Fi audio system with MP3 and 6 CD changer, dual zone climate control, cruise control, electric front seats and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), reverse and front park sensor,immobilizer security system, auto rain viper. Different in two variant, standard and premium is the extra equipment of factory fitted GPS system and also leather seats.

Wheels Alignment and Balancing

Wheels alignment and balancing can be done very easy at almost all tyres shop. Computerised alignment machine used with Peugeot 407's wheels alignment data is required. Poor wheels alignment i.e. angle of wheels ( toe and camber) can be adjusted straight away without additional items to be installed. Most of the car esp. Japanese and local brand with McPherson Struts need additional "special bolt and nut " in order to adjust camber. Peugeot 407 not required this things to be installed, not need to spent for this extra things which is cost at least RM250 for 1 pairs of this item.

7 Airbags Surpass Japanese Car Spec. in Malaysia

To buy a car please look at safety features, not only the price. It is amazing that a car with a price like Japanese brand but rich of safety features, e.g: airbags. Two frontal airbags is common car's spec. today in Malaysia. There are cars with more than these basic frontal airbags, but unfortunately all of these cars are categorised as luxury cars. Only one car have the luxury features yet affordable price-Peugeot407 CKD.

Autoadaptive Gearbox
PSA Group has long recognized that an automatic gearbox requires different torque and power characteristics. The auto adaptive triple mode 'fuzzy logic' gearbox means that it is both faster and more economical. It also produces significantly lower emissions.
Developed by PSA Group, the automatic gearbox draws on the latest in manufacturing technology, computer software, electronics and, in particular, fuzzy logic. The four speed automatic offers the driver a choice of three modes, Normal, Sport and Snow/Slippery.
Beyond this each of the programmes has a further ranges of programmes it can use to provide the driver with the optimum gear changing solution for both his personal requirements and the driving conditions. These are chosen and mixed by the fuzzy logic software, so called because it takes decisions by classifying a very wide range of parameters in descending order of importance even if they are uncertain or contradictory.
The software also operates to minimize exhaust emissions by working in constant communication with the engine's control and management system and it has a complete service, error recording and limp home mode. It can even detect when the P407 is going down a hill and provide engine braking as required.

Automatic with manual override – Porsche’s Tiptronic

Porsche's Tiptronic was the earliest semi-automatic transmission offered by a major car maker. First appeared in 1990 in 911 as an option, it soon became available in 968, Boxster and licensed to Audi and Mitsubishi for production. Meanwhile, Honda, BMW, Chrysler and Toyota also developed their own version.

Based on an automatic transmission with torque converter, besides conventional auto mode it offers a manual override allowing the driver to shift by pushing the shifter forward and backward. Note that it is no quicker than a conventional auto. It only intends to enhance driving fun through involving the driver.

In manual mode, the computer may intervene under harmful conditions. For instance, if the driver let the rev exceeding redline without upshift, the computer will shift automatically.
Tiptronic was developed in conjunction by Porsche, ZF and Bosch. Porsche originated the idea, ZF made the gearbox and Bosch responsible for the electronic control.

407 Superb Handling.

Peugeot 407 has outstanding road handling. Thanks to "double wishbone" suspension steering is not affected by drive line interference or irregularities in the road surface.
Cornering is consider unforgettable moment. It is like driving the car on the wheel track. This is the result from “Electronic Stability Program(ESP)”. ESP minimise the risk of skidding or rollover resulting from driver error, sudden emergencies or unexpected hazardous road surfaces. The objective is to help the driver regain full control as soon as possible in difficult conditions. If the driver does something unusual such as takes a corner too quickly, makes an unexpected evasive manoeuvre, the car rapidly finds its balance once more without any loss of control.

Satellite Navigation GPS Firmware and Map Update for 407

407 owners can update the GPS firmware via this website:http://www.speednavi.com/. The owner need to sign in as member before the update can be done. Download the software and save it to a SD card and insert it to the SD slot in car's the glove box, go to setting page and touch the 'upgrade' icon. Follow the instruction appears on the screen.

For map update, the navist unit will ask for authentication thet need software serial no. and licence no. Please cal En. Zam of NZ Galaxy 016-3323387 if you don't have the said serial nos.

As the result, the updated Navist firmware have slightly better in term of audio for FM transmission to the car's FM radio system and the updated map for the GPS navigation.

29 March 2009, I and family went for shopping at Midvalley Megamall. The most exciting was there were lions exhibited at the mall, 308,207cc & 407. My kids loves lions very much include the youngest 2 yeras old son shouted ' peegoot!'when he saw the cars.

The 2009 Peugeot 407 arrived in Malaysia from 14 February 2009 with prices starting from RM128,888. Subtle external visual improvements include the new grille treatment and revised air intake up front along with body-colored rubbing strips and a new rear bumper that now incorporates a diffuser style number-plate surround.
Rather than go through a full-size redesign, Peugeot preferred a light update for its 407 Sedan. Changes on the outside include the reworked grille upfront that's been enhanced with more doses of chrome along with the new headlamps and tail-lamps, also redesigned rear boot lid with a more acutely angled ducktail spoiler for greater high speed stability, lights and rear bumper which now incorporates a rear valance to create a wider look at the rear. Inside, Peugeot has enhanced the 407 with extra comfort equipment and in particular onboard temperature control, a new front parking assistance and piano black finish for the central console.
In addition, the multi info display that was previously positioned on the top of the dashboard in its own housing has been incorporated into the Multimedia and Navigation Screen for a cleaner look. The proven 2.0L EW10A engine that develops 140hp at 6,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4,000rpm remains in the new 407.

Electronics Stability Control

P407- ELECTRONICS STABILITY PROGRAM

Instability may arise through inappropriate speed, emergency situations or other unexpected conditions. Such circumstances can be especially hazardous for vehicles, where even momentary loss of control could lead to potential rollover situations.
Electronic Stability Control is the generic term for systems designed to improve a vehicle's handling, particularly at the limits where the driver might loose control of the vehicle.

The system contributes enormously to improving safety by monitoring key stability parameters and automatically triggering appropriate controls. It is designed to work on wet or slippery roads (the aim being to loss of control resulting from either oversteer or understeer conditions) and on dry roads (where the main risk is roll over resulting from excessive speed or adverse camber on bends).

The system has sensors that measure lateral acceleration at the vehicle’s centre of gravity. If this force exceeds a predetermined limit, the engine torque is cut and wheel brakes are applied. ESP cannot override a car's physical limits. If a driver pushes the possibilities of the car's chassis and ESP too far, ESP cannot prevent a crash. It is a tool to help the driver maintain control.

The system is able to detect driver reaction by comparing the yaw angle with the steering angle. If these do not correspond, engine torque is cut and wheel brakes applied to stabilise the vehicle. Precisely which brakes are activated (on which wheels and which axles) depend upon the nature of the instability.

Robert Bosch GmbH were the first to deply an Electronic Stability Control system, called Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) that was used by Mercedes-Benz. It was then introduced to the mass market by Continental Automotive Systems under the broader name of Electronic Stability Control, which is now the more common term recognized by the Society of Automotive Engineers, although individual motor manufactures use a range of different marketing names .

ESP combines anti-lock brakes, traction control and yaw control (yaw is spin around a vertical axis). To grasp how it works, think of steering a canoe. If you want the canoe to turn or rotate to the right, you plant the paddle in the water on the right to provide a braking moment on the right side. The canoe pivots or rotates to the right. ESP fundamentally does the same to assist the driver.

Numerous international studies have confirmed the effectiveness of ESP in helping the driver maintain control of the car, help save lives and reduce the severity of crashes. In the fall of 2004 in the U.S., the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration confirmed the international studies, releasing results of a field study in the U.S. of ESP effectiveness. NHTSA concluded that ESP reduces crashes by 35%. The prestigious Insurance Institute for Highway Safety later issued their own study that concluded the widespread application of ESC could save 7,000 lives a year. That makes ESP the greatest safety equipment development since seat belts, according to some experts.

The 407 has a very strong and stable passenger safety cage. It scored close to the maximum number of available points in the frontal impact. The restraint systems and airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver, protected occupants and kept the driver’s chest and head away from the steering wheel. Side impact protection includes side airbags and a curtain airbag. Child protection was good but pedestrian protection proved to be average, with no protection given where an adult’s head would most likely strike. Front impact Dual stage non-tethered airbags for the driver and front passenger and belt pre-tensioners plus load limiters worked well. The driver’s knee airbag was also very effective. The body showed minimal deformation at its sill and screen pillar and only minor footwell intrusion. Rear seats each had three-point belts with load limiters. Side impact The seat-mounted thorax and pelvis airbag and head curtain airbag worked efficiently; the curtain also protected those sat in the rear. However, the 407 was penalised in this section of the tests because forces transferred in an unrealistic manner to the test dummy’s spine, so reducing the level of forces recorded by instrumentation in its chest.

Child-protection The recommended restraints were forward-facing Britax Romer Duo Plus, which were fitted to the car using ISOFix mountings. Both children were protected in the frontal and side impact although the older child’s chest load in the frontal impact was just a little on the high side. The 407 has a manual on/off switch for the passenger frontal airbag. Instructions for using it were given in a non-permanent pictogram and a written label on the passenger’s end of the fascia Permanent labels fitted to both sides of the passenger’s sun visor warned against placing a child in a rear-facing seat opposite an airbag.

Pedestrian protection The bonnet’s leading edge and, though less, the bumper gave protection. Limited protection is available where a child’s head might strike, but none was evident for an adult.
